Day 1 Morning:

  1. Open discussion on public symposium from 9/24. Responses from non speaker/panelists
  2. Mindfulness vs. Satipatthana: What is the difference? And how do we build gateways from popular mindfulness practice into the deeper system of Buddhist practice. (Initial reactions from Asian ordained sangha)
  3. Clarifying the aims and goals of Buddhist practice in the postmodern world (and how it differs from other approaches to psycho-spiritual development)

Day 1 Afternoon BREAK OUT GROUPS (3 one hour sessions. You can move to another group after every session)

#1: Walking Meditation (kinhin) in the Japanese Soto Zen tradition

Finding balance in the body andhow to use kinhin for gathering strength and balancing oneself to be able to face other people with problems and as a tool to teach those who want to meditate but cannot to sit due to great psychological difficulties. with Cecilia Hadding (Sweden) 

#2: The Science & Art of Happiness

How to teach the principles and techniques of meditation (focusing on mindfulness) together with the practice of self-compassion for common people in simple terms. with Ven. Yomin (Malaysia/Hong Kong)

#3: Meditation for those with advanced cancer

How to offer a guided meditation followed by council practice with an emphasis on equanimity (upekṣā) practices. with Rev. Brenda Phillips (USA)

#4: Buddhist based suicide prevention

Buddhist-based experiential practice which explores incorporating the Four Reminders into both individual work and systems work for those suffering from non-suicidal self-harm and suicide ideation to establish relational compassion for oneself and others. with Jinji Willingham (USA)

#5: Buddhist based counseling

Introducing the Open-Focus method for stabilizing a helper or a chaplain and the six steps of Eugene Gendlin’s Focusing Therapy, which provides the base for any counseling process. with Ven. Zinai (Taiwan)

Day 2 Morning & Afternoon (until 15:00)

Maitri Space Awareness:

introducing and exploring the innovative Buddhist psychotherapeutic practice created by Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche. with Elaine Yuen

Day 2 Afternoon (15:00-17:00)

Concluding Discussions & Establishing Future Goals
